The headline number holds only if you play perfect basic strategy. The 0.38% house edge is the sum of several rule-specific contributions: the 3:2 blackjack payout gives back ~2.32% to the player vs. a 6:5 table (which would push the edge closer to 1.8%), dealer standing on all 17s (including soft) adds another ~0.22% in player favor, and 8 decks is the standard shoe baseline.

What erodes the RTP in practice: insurance bets (which carry a ~7% edge against the player and should never be taken without card counting), skipping legitimate double-downs, and misplaying soft 17–18 against dealer 7+. A casual player making no conscious decisions typically realizes an effective RTP of ~97–98%, not 99.62%.

You can play 1, 2, or 3 hands per round. Each hand acts independently against the same dealer card, and the cards dealt to all three hands come from the same shoe — which matters if you're tracking (even loosely) the composition of the remaining deck.

Bankroll effect: three parallel hands triple your exposure per round, but the variance grows only as √3 (~1.73x) instead of 3x because all hands share the dealer outcome. For advantage players this is statistically preferable to single-hand at a higher stake per hand.
